Collaborate to compete in the Flat World

In the Flat World, companies must co-create products and services with employees, customers and partners to accelerate innovation. According to Balaji Sampath, Group Manager, Corporate Marketing, Infosys, and Manish Srivastava, Principal Architect, Microsoft Technology Center, Infosys, companies must collaborate across their value chain for better insight into demand and supply information, to adapt to changing business cycles and optimize cost structures.

They believe collaboration breaks down 'information silos' created by a geographically dispersed and mobile workforce, customer base and network of partners. As technology enables companies to connect people, processes and information in a contextual manner to facilitate collaboration, companies must adopt a role-based approach that delivers unified workbenches with embedded information or communication capabilities.

Balaji and Manish cite the success story of a leading pharmaceutical company that enabled collaboration to accelerate development of new drugs. The company partnered with Microsoft and Infosys to develop an Office Business Application. The application helped scientists screen databases and view the results in a contextual, multi-dimensional display. It eliminated redundant research, reduced the drug discovery lifecycle and resulted in faster innovation.
